How to make beats and make money! Print E-mail
Added By: Youngman | Source: beatcreators.com
Do you look at celebrity producers and wish you were in their shoes or do you just want to be a basement producer making beats with friends while inhaling substances that cost more money than you've ever made off of your beats? If your tired of your mom telling you to turn down that damn music and would like your own professional studio to work in. These are some of the things you can do to get yourself on the right path.

Perfect the craft.

This is the area where most producers get stuck. You don't have to be perfect you just need to be good.  Most producers don't know everything and they can't do everything they just get good enough and realize that they will always be learning new things.  Don't try and master all equipment just get really good at a few or even one. This is one field were being a jack of all trades doesn't pay off to often.

What do you want to be

You have to do some serious soul searching and figure out what you want to be and really how much it matters to you. If you are happy with just producing as a hobby, that's perfectly fine. Most producers do it just for entertainment. But if you want more than that you really have to ask yourself are you willing to put in the time to do what it takes. It's not all fun and games like most people think. Professional producers spend a lot of time doing things other than making tracks. Like signing and reading contracts, working out deals, interviews, and working with all the members of their team (accountants, lawyers, managers etc..). You need to be honest with yourself before you waste a lot of time and money that could be going towards something else.

Learn the business

Now that you've decided you still want the fame and all the headaches that come with it. You must take the time to learn how the business works. This topic is way out of the scope of this article so the following are a few ways that you can accomplish this:
  1. Go to a school that will teach you like Full Sail or a University that has music business courses.
  2. Find a mentor that has actual experience not just a local celebrity.
  3. Read a many books as you possibly can or scour the Internet for information on the subject.
  4. Be a music industry intern at a record label or recording studio.
  5. Use BeatCreators.com. :)
Build Relationships

This is one the area that separates no-name producers from the famous ones. For example, if any decent or relatively good producer with drive had the relationships that Just Blaze has then he would have an equal amount of success. The relationships that you make will make or break your music production career. You must learn how to create long lasting friendships with strangers in order to be successful. This is the opposite of what your mother taught you as a child but it is critical in order to succeed. When I say strangers I don't mean any person of the street I mean people that can help you with your goals and vice versa. Don't always think about what someone can do for you, think about what you can offer them and you will build strong relationships.

People don't like having people around them that always ask for things and never give anything back especially in the music industry. Crabs in the bucket don't make it in this business.

Build the right team

You must build the right team in order to be successful. This team includes management, engineers, lawyers, accountants and maybe one day assistants. Everyone on your team must know as much if not more about the business as you in order for you to be successful. If not, they all must have the desire to learn and accomplish the goals of the team.

Now whats hot

How do you know whats hot? In order to be able to do this you must be able to juggle two things, listening to your gut and studying the industry. You must study the industry that your in the same way a day trader studies the market. Most successful producers create their style of music based on their gut feeling about what the market wants and then what the labels are asking for. Understanding what the market wants or will want, will allow you to be perceived as creative.  Also, you must listen to a wide variety of music. Beef up your music library. Listen to every genre as much as possible.

P.S. These are not all of the answers just to get you started. Good Luck!

Good article, but don't forget about submitting your music/ beats to licensing companies. They can get you a steady income if you give them enough good tracks.
