Music producers always ask the question, "What are record labels looking for?". The answer is very simple. They are looking for producers that can produce unique hits based on a given criteria. Every record company is different when it comes to the type of music that they are looking for but they all know what they want.

If you do then good for you. If you don't, you need to get out and do some research. Most professional music producers started out producing music for artist in their local area. It's easier to build relationships with these artist because the degrees of separation between you and them are lower than major artist. Build your resume and experience here first then move on to try and fry bigger fish.

How many people do you know that really love your beats? This is more important then spamming people on their MySpace page with obnoxious "By My Beats" ads. This pretty much is a waste of your time and efforts. You should spend your time perfecting your craft and focusing on the people that are your fans.

The most difficult part about being a producer and musician is getting the people who matter to respect your art. The need for representation (manager, agent, business mangers, etc.) is crucial to getting your music heard by the right people; the people who can bridge the gap between being a professional in the industry and just another schmuck with a home studio and nice equipment. A problem that I frequently run into in my search for representation is something that I like to call The Box Perspective.
