Having a degree can’t hurt, but the decision is up to you. Kanye West enrolled in college, but then dropped hence the name of his album College Dropout. Timbaland never went to school and Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard. Clearly success can be achieved without a degree. However, some people learn better in a school environment.
If you want to teach audio production you definitely need a degree. Music Technology is a growing field and many colleges and Universities are adding Recording Arts programs to their curriculum. This means they need professors. Professors make decent salaries and most universities require at least a Master’s degree to teach. Some require a PHD. NYU has an excellent program that Clive Davis, Chief Creative Officer of Sony BMG, helped to fund. In fact the program is called The Clive Davis Department of Recording Music.

Ike Barnes from the beatcreators.com asked me a great question. This is such a good question I’m going to answer it here online. Here’s Ike’s question “If Sam Walton was a music producer what things would he do to advertise build a brand as a producer?” Here’s My answer:
To create a brand, Sam Walton would tell music producers to put a face with the music. This explains why Timbaland, Missy Elliot, Kanye West, and the Neptunes, have jumped on the mic and in front of the camera. Every Brand Name Has A Logo For music producers their face and personality is their logo. When you think of Timbaland, you think of a guy that can beat your _ _ _ with his fists and his kick drums! Timbaland turned himself into a logo. The New York Times confirmed my theory on Timbaland in an article they published about titled ‘Can He Make Himself A Star’. The article discusses how Timbaland made hismself a brand name. Here’s an excerpt:

In today's producer market most producers are getting their grind on with the net. It is a never ending gateway to many artists across the globe. At first many producers start out selling beats on sites like rocbattle.com, mybeatshop.com, buythatbeat.com, etc. Many start to realize that if you keep leading your customer to your page on beat selling website they may take a look at your beats and end up buying from someone else's page. Well how do you get rid of the competition? Easy, by having your own website with your own domain name. Not, www.myspace.com/???????. Myspace is great don't get me wrong, but it still is not totally focused on you.

The Equipment Be Very Careful What Digital Audio Workstation to Choose Many of the greatest beats have been made in hardware equipment, especially old school tracks. And till that day the Triton, Motif and the legendary MPC still is use by many musicians. But the truth is that software has taken over. The things that your computer do today were only dreamed about years ago. Reason, Fruity Loops, Cubase, Sonar, Logic, Live and many others offer incredible value. But you should be very careful which one to choose. Every production software has its pros and and jumping from one to another just because you like the color of the interface is not going to get you anywhere. Reason is great for any type of music that is electronic you won't be able to record vocals or real instruments. Live is great for loops and FX's but not so much for editing and recording. Logic is the absolute best (T-Pain works on exclusively) but only works on Mac computers. Sonar is right behind logic but is only for PC. If you are starting out and have a PC I highly recommend checking Fruity Loops. It's a lot of fun, it's cheap and it's loaded with features. I would also recommend checking the lite versions of all the softwares first before looking at the $500.00 to $800.00 versions.

Today if an young unknown artists wants to make a demo all he or she has to do is a Google or Yahoo search for ‘buy beats’. The search results provide an array of on line producers to choose from. They can purchase the beat on line and download it immediately. They know longer have to rent out a studio or buy studio equipment to make a track. All they have to do is look on line.
Of course big names artists will continue to use big named producers. However, the young and aspiring artists are going on line to find their producers, as they should. They’ve been getting ripped of for years and now they have a larger budget to record their vocals. In the past the budget was sucked up from production costs. Now $100 for the track and your done!
