CD sales are at record lows. People continue to illegally download songs over the Internet. Record labels file law suit after law suit to make sure they, and the artists the represent, get their fair share of royalties. The debate over the best way to distribute music on the Web took a new turn last week at South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin. I wasn't there, but I hear from other attendees that a Friday panel discussion sparked some controversy.

Whatever stage you are in as a songwriter, artist, producer, engineer, studio musician, touring musician, or jack of all trades, you’re probably starting to develop a strategy for receiving criticism. If you’re out there working your connections at all, whether it be performing, asking co-writers to write with you, or wading through all the possible ways to promote yourself as an artist, you are inevitably forming your personal perspective of the music industry. The industry itself is wide and multi-faceted, and it’s no wonder two artists can have completely different paths aiming for the same success.

Making money is what separates a professional from an amateur. How much money you make almost always directly impacts the quality of your life. Of course, some would argue that a person who is happy is living at the highest quality of life, no matter what material possessions and capital they have. That’s cool. But when we evaluate economics, we evaluate tangible things, mainly because it enables us to measure and compare.

Without question one of the most important and influential producers in the history of hip-hop, Pete Rock is responsible for some of the greatest rap music ever made. Known for his impeccable crate-digging skills, rugged drum work, and affinity for soul-jazz loops, he has crafted timeless hits for the likes of Nas, Biggie, Run-D.M.C., Ghostface, Public Enemy, and his former partner C.L. Smooth, among countless others. He has amassed a discography that is almost unparalleled in modern music, and is widely regarded as one of the top beat maestros of all time. On his latest release, NY's Finest, he collaborates with emcees both new (Little Brother, Papoose) and old (Lords of the Underground, Chip Fu), lacing them all with his undeniably dope tracks.
